Effective Communications in the ‘Next Normal’

November 11, 2020

Let’s get honest here. 2020 has been an unusual and disruptive year. We all seem to have our own set of stories to narrate to our future generations. ‘And, how our communications methods evolve in the ‘post-pandemic’ era’ is going to be the most crucial chapter of those sets of stories.

Some of us weren’t fully accustomed to working from home and communicating with our clients/teams while sitting on our couches. Many things have changed and before we know we are already on what many would like to put it as ‘The Next Normal’. It’s difficult when you get asked to virtual talking where there is no audience to see. Do not worry, here are some quick communications hacks from the stalwarts which can help you make an effective communicator even on virtual calls.

C: Convince (your audience). It’s not humanly possible to know everything under the roof, but according to Jim Rohn, effective communication is 20% of what you know and 80% of how you feel about what you know. When you are convinced, so is your audience.

R: Remember to add humour. Making people laugh is an art, if you know it, use it as your superpower in your communications. We live somewhere in between formal and not-so-formal times.

I: Innovate your backdrops. Good plain background with some plants or quirky wall art as a backdrop can help you to garner straight attention from your listeners.

S: Suit up! Dressing up when you have nowhere to go, umm, might not sound natural. Nonetheless, do it. Suit up like you have a TED talk to give in the next fifteen minutes. And not just from the waist up!

P: Place the camera right. Before you commence your communications, be doubly sure of the camera angle. After all, we don’t want others to see what’s cooking in our kitchen or what colour are our floor tiles? Right?

In summation, communications CRISP!
